The Story Of the Rising Damp Treatment

Our studio is my absolute favourite place in the world to just get lost in the music and perfect my work.  We are on the ground floor, which is slightly recessed below street level, so there is a great  feeling of privacy.  When the studio was put in, it was required for the property owners that a void was left between the studio interior and the brickwork for inspection purposes.  The building was almost 300 years old, and we knew that it had previous problems with damp in the past around 50 years ago.  It was really no surprise when the building surveyors told us that the damp problems were back, and we would need to have rising damp treatment quickly in order to rectify the problem.

The Joys Of Old Buildings

We have to say that we had never noticed any issues when we were in our beautiful wooden studio rooms.  All we noticed is that occasionally there was a bit of a smell, but nothing to cause alarm.  We must say we are glad that they caught it when they did as it may have started to compromise the interior of the studio.  The building itself is structurally sound, and a beautiful old building that is a genuine pleasure to work in, so I guess that is the price you pay for working in an old building.

Ventilation Needed

The damp experts recommended that we needed to upgrade the existing ventilation system to keep air moving through the building.  The old ventilation system was installed many year ago, and it was clear that it was not quite up to the job of keeping fresh air in the building. We made sure that an ultra-quiet fan was installed so that there was no noise in the studio, and that it was installed far away from the studio itself. In order to complete this work and the rising damp work, the studio was closed for 24 hours, which was really good for us as it meant that we did not lose any time. We were able to take one day of doing admin and other boring tasks that needed to be sorted, then the studio was back online the next day. Also, the smell has disappeared, so our noses are a lot happier.

Before we start we thought it would be best to mention that some of the best bands out there were formed organically, meaning they came together because they shared the same musical taste and vision.

Not everyone is going to be on the same page as you musically, and that’s ok, but just remember that being patient and waiting for the right people to come along is sometimes the best way.

Without further ado, lets get started with our top tips for starting a band.

Tip 1 – Find Your Band Mates

This step is obvious, your going to need a team of musicians to get the band going.

You should decide what the band members should consist of, but traditionally you will need a drummer, guitarist, bassist and singer.

What instruments you will need will depend heavily on the genre that you are operating in, so look at other bands for inspiration on this one.

We would say that no matter what you bands style is, you almost certainly need a drummer and someone to hold down the low end, like a bassist or piano.

These elements are essential to the mix in order to give the sound depth and rhythm.

Tip 2 – Find Your Sound

This is a very important step, so make sure you spend time with your new band mates discussing influences and styles.

Your band’s style is likely to be somewhere in the middle of all of your influences.

If any of the band members have already written a few songs, make sure to check them out and see what direction they are going in.

Most importantly, make sure you pick a genre that the signer can sign well.

I Wanted To Sell My House Quickly

This is my story of how I took the plunge to fully immerse myself in my music career and leave my old life behind. The decision to sell my house quickly did not come lightly, and I had thought about if for hours on end wondering if I was barking mad. Looking back on it, I still think I was extremely nieve and foolish to make such a risky decision, but now I am extremely glad I did. After 20 years of playing all around the world for hundreds of thousands of people, I am so glad I decided to make the move.  It is a choice that most people wouldn’t even dream of making, but I have never been one of those people that follow the crowd.

Why It Happened

I had been working in a fairly unexciting job for about 5 years, and had almost paid off my mortgage. I was at a point in life where most people would consider that I had made it, but I knew it wasn’t my calling. I was playing in some small venues trying to get my music out there, but there was no real urgency behind what I was doing. So I decided that this would be my kick up the backside that would hopefully get my hungry to succeed.  I sold my house and put most of the money into a saving bond and spent the rest on recording a new album and marketed it myself. I short term rented for a bit while recording, then did some couch surfing, before things started to pick up for my music.

I Started Touring

To be honest, the events that happened next happened very quickly. I managed to get signed to an agency, then I got signed to a label, then I was touring all over the country. That was it, and I cannot say for certain whether or not it would have happened if I hadn’t sold my house, but I know that it changed something about me and my approach.  It was like it had to happen after that.

The Scissor Lift Table Story

We were headed up to Manchester to play a gig that we had all been excited about for weeks.  Our booking agent contacted us to let us know that we were supporting a pretty major band, and we were all buzzing with excitement.  It was early at around 7.30am on a crisp Friday morning, when we all gathered around with our sausage rolls waiting for the van to arrive so that we could load our things on.  There was one particularly large flight case that housed all the drum equipment together, a neat storage solution but a pain in the arse to move.  It usually required specialist equipment like a scissor lift table in order to get it on and off vehicles, but luckily the truck driver had all the necessary tools.

When it All Went Wrong

The truck arrived and the process of loading it all on began.  The driver wanted to put a few other flight cases in first, then the big one with the drums, then put all the smaller pieces in last.  Once the heavy flight case was manoeuvred onto the lifting device, the driver started slowly raising it into the air.  We all know that the lifter was rated to lift the case, which weighed about 400kg, but we all watched with baited breath as the huge case was lifted into the air.  When it was about a foot from the top the scissor lift started whining and then clunked, before coming to an abrupt stop in the air.

The Start of the Nightmare

When this happened, we thought the same thing, and we were all right.  The stupid giant flight case had broken the scissor lift, leaving it stranded in mid air and leaving us stranded, unable to set off for the gig.  Naturally we all jumped into action, and tried to manually move the case the last foot, but it was so heavy and awkward that we know we would probably drop and break it if we kept trying.

What Happened

We ended up having to wait for a fellow trucker to arrive with another hoist so that we could transfer the case over, then finally get it onto the truck.  This cost us 2 or 3 hours’ worth of delay time, and meant that we had to race up the road in order to make the gig on time.  We just made it in time to do a rapid set up, didn’t have enough time to get a sound check, and were rushed around by the organisers.  In the end we played one of the best gigs we have ever played and has the best night playing for a great crowd.
